Wavy Hair Grass - Deschampsia flexuosa
Deschampsia flexuosa, also know as Avenella flexuosa, Wavy Hair Grass, or Crinkle Hair Grass, is a perennial grass native to northern lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Michigan Flora describes its preferred habitat as open, dry, sandy or rocky shores, dunes, and plains, usually associated with pine, particularly jack pine, oak, and aspen. It flowers in both sun and part shade.
This decorative, graceful grass forms clumps of fine mounded foliage near the ground, approximately a foot in height, with airy, fine stalks of feathery seeds up to 3 feet tall. Like many of our northern plants, data on faunal relationships is lacking, but native grasses typically host butterflies and moths, and clumping grasses provide nest habitat for bees and birds.
