Solomon Seal - Polygonatum biflorum
Polygonatum biflorum, also known as Solomon’s Seal, is a perennial wildflower native to forests of Michigan and the UP. Plant reaches 3-4 feet tall and flowers from May to June with a string of green blossoms that hang gracefully under the stem like ornaments. It prefers part sun to full shade, medium to dry soil and will grow in clay, loam or sand.
Solomon Seal is reported to be able to hold its own against invasive Goutweed (bishop’s weed, eastside weed). Some people use a dense planting to keep neighbor’s Goutweed at bay. A dense planting of natives is always preferable to an invasive plant because natives support the lives of native insects, birds, and critters while taking up space.
