False Dragonhead - Physostegia virginiana
Physostegia virginiana, also known as False Dragonhead or Obedient Plant, is a perennial wildflower native to Michigan and the UP. Plants are 3 to 4 feet in height with an equal width and blooms range from pink to white. The bloom time lasts all summer through fall. The name Obedient Plant comes from the tendancy for the blooms to stay put when bent in a new direction.
False Dragonhead prefers moist soil, but tolerates medium to wet. Plants are nicely upright, but rich soils or shade can cause flopping. False Dragonhead is an enthusiastic spreader by rhizome and seed. Its colonies of profuse blooms attract hummingbirds and butterflies, as well as other pollinators. Good for rain gardens, butterfly gardens, and drifts of color.
