Dark Green Bulrush - Scirpus atrovirens
Scirpus atrovirens, known as Dark Green or Common Bulrush, is a grass-like perennial native to Michigan in moist meadows, bogs, stream/river/lake margins, and ditches. It spreads slowly by rhyzomes and grows to 4-5’ tall, with broad, grasslike leaves. Culms are topped in late spring with spiky flower clusters that turn brown but remain decorative.
Prefers moist to wet soils including shallow standing water, and full sun to part shade. It also grows in submerged containers.
